Trip to gym saves pensioner's life

Mr Newboult underwent a routine check-up with fitness instructor Aron Bruton who spotted a metabolic abnormality on a machine printout. This led Mr Newboult, 66, to visit his GP who diagnosed the early stages of bowel cancer. Now following surgery to remove the tumour and part of the large intestine, Mr Newboult is looking forward to getting back in the gym. He said: "I had no symptoms at all, nothing. Without that reading I would not have known about it. "Aron saved my life. I don't know what it was that he found in that printout but he knew it wasn't right and told me to see my doctor."

Mr Newboult, who lives at Poplar Drive, Charlton Down, said the diagnosis of bowel cancer came after tests showed he was anaemic. The loss of iron was due to internal bleeding that was undetectable at that stage. He said the discovery and treatment of his condition had caused emotional highs and lows. He said: "The diagnosis of cancer was awful. But I had the surgery in January and it's gone well. I will have to have some chemotherapy though in case any cells had escaped, and they did find a few cells in a lymph gland. But I'm on the mend and putting weight back on. "He hopes to return to the senior fit sessions at the club that he and his wife Hazel both enjoy.

Mr Bruton, owner of Herrison Health Club and Spa at Charlton Down, used a machine to carry out a body composition analysis on Mr Newboult and realised the results indicated a metabolic problem. He said: "I'm not a magician but I've used the machine so many times and knew Eric was one of our fitter senior clients. I had a feeling that there was something there, such as a thyroid problem, although the rest of the results were very good. "I suggested he asked his  doctor for tests. I'm very glad he did. There was a problem caused by an iron deficiency and they did more tests to find out why and that's when they found he had a tumour.

"It made me feel good to know it was found so early - a few months down the line and Eric will be fine."

The test takes only a few minutes and Mr Bruton does them at no extra cost around three times a year for the clients who attend the senior fit sessions. Mr Newboult urged other people to take advantage of the sessions and have the test done.

He said: "If I had waited until I'd had symptoms then it might have been too late - it could have spread all over the place. Aron saved my life with that test."
